Dear readers,

I am writing to you with an update from the production side of your journals. I have been the Managing Editor for JAVMA and AJVR for 14 years and am committed to our goal of delivering the timeliest scientific and news content to JAVMA print readers in the most sustainable way possible. As you might recall, in Dr. Fortier’s June 2023 editorial she described the decision process leading to our current paper choice. We faced unprecedented challenges in print production in 2022, including a paper-mill labor strike that made delivering your journal difficult. This was in addition to ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic leading to rising wood prices and supply-chain shortages. We were proud to have been able to deliver JAVMA to you uninterrupted.

In this September issue, you might notice that the paper you are holding is slightly heavier, is a bit brighter, and offers slightly less opacity than the paper with which you have become familiar. This is the result of another paper-mill strike that started in July. It is unclear how long the labor stoppage will last. Presently, there is a contingency plan in place for the paper mill to transition resources to one of its partner mills so we can resume production of our current stock. Regardless of the type of paper we are using, you can be assured that the print facility and we at JAVMA perform quality control during and following each printing to evaluate the performance of the paper stock. We will continue to review our paper options and keep you informed.

Despite the challenges ahead, rest assured that we will always work to deliver JAVMA to you as you have become accustomed. We thank you for your ongoing support.

Regards,

Nick DeLuca
