Dear JAVMA Reader,

The JAVMA, and your entire AVMA staff, hope you enjoy the inaugural JAVMA supplemental Issue that you have just received along with this regular January 15, 2022 issue of JAVMA. As you might recall, this was released as a digital edition on December 15, 2021 and can be found here: mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=728808. One of the unique features of the digital edition is article narration. Look for the speaker icon, click, and listen! Our next supplemental issue will be in June 2022 and thematically focused on the urogenital track, and followed by another supplementary issue in December 2022. If you have clinically impactful manuscripts that you would like to consider for one of these supplements, please reach out to me at lfortier@avma.org. We are striving to bring cross-species, cross-disciplines manuscripts important for your practice and our profession through our JAVMA publication.

There are a couple more JAVMA innovations that I would like to take this opportunity to highlight. First is a modification in how the AVMA will be delivering news to members and our other colleagues across veterinary medicine. News happens all the time, not on a preset publishing schedule. For many years, we’ve brought you selected JAVMA News Express stories online ahead of print to report the biggest breaking news as it happened. Now we’re expanding that approach.

Moving forward, the AVMA is adopting a digital-first approach for all news coverage: You can visit our state-of-the-art newsroom at avma.org/News for 24/7 news coverage and bookmark it for easy reference. In this way, you’ll get timely coverage that keeps you informed of news from across our profession as it happens. The JAVMA will continue to publish important, informative, but less time-sensitive news along with the in-depth clinical research and features you rely on, while we encourage you to visit the digital newsroom for late-breaking news. You can also sign up to receive AVMA’s email News Bulletin at avma.org/Newsletters and follow AVMA on social media for frequent updates.

Our JAVMA staff is very excited to reveal another JAVMA first. If you review the masthead, comprising the first few pages that list your editorial board and other individuals associated with the journal, you might notice that it has been redesigned and there are several new names. More specifically, we have several new Associate Editors and a new Editorial Manager. Ms. Karen Dodson, our new Editorial Manager, comes to us with 20+ years of experience in medical journal management including many years with our human counterpart, the American Medical Association. Ms. Dodson will ensure efficient movement of manuscripts from submission to publication as we strive to provide timely publication and delivery of materials to our readers, and the best possible customer service for our authors. Deputy Editor Sandra Lefebvre and I are also exceptionally pleased and excited to have developed the first Associate Editor Board for our journals. Our new Associate Editors are key opinion leaders and innovators in their respective fields, and will bring best practices and new ideas from across the broad profession of veterinary medicine to our journals.

Finally, I encourage you to continue to visit our new journal website including our revamped instructions for authors where you will find author-friendly instructions and a slight redesign in our manuscript categories. These changes to our journals are a result of listening to you — our members and readers. Your opinions are important to us at JAVMA, so please feel free to reach out to me with comments and suggestions at any time. Thank you in advance for your valuable feedback.
