Heal Your Heart: Coping With the Loss of a Pet

Reviewed by Melissa Bain, DVM, DACVB, MS

The Heal Your Heart: Coping With the Loss of a Pet audiobook and accompanying booklet provide a resource for grieving pet owners that covers the basics of coping as well as opportunities for self-reflection and meditative responses. It is an extremely interesting concept to offer this as an audiobook so that grieving owners can experience the process of meditation and affirmation with the calming, yet focusing, music providing a background in which to experience it. When the author is giving specific information on a topic, there is no background music, but there is background music during the meditation and affirmation parts of the chapters.

The information provided is extremely sound. The booklet accompanying the audiobook provides a summary of the verbal message, including a summary of the grief process, dealing with guilt, rituals that may be helpful, and how owners can best take care of themselves. Importantly, it also offers readers links to organizations and websites that offer help during the process of dealing with the loss of a pet. One nice touch with this book is a section on talking with children about their loss, with the accompanying audio done with appropriate wording and tone of voice for younger children.

I believe this book would be a good resource for owners who have lost a beloved animal family member.—By Karen Adele Litzinger. CD-ROM and guidebook; illustrated. Heal from Pet Loss, 7625 W Hutchinson St, Pittsburgh, PA 15218. ISBN 978-0-615-29858-0. 2009. Price $18.00.
