May I Pet Your Dog?

Reviewed by Susan L. Ferraro, DVM, MS

May I Pet Your Dog is a charming, nicely illustrated, and clearly written children's book. Geared toward younger children, it gives accurate basic information about canine etiquette for children and adults. The authors take great care to emphasize the appropriate methods of meeting dogs and provide some good examples of common dog behavior. The message that safety around dogs requires supervision is delivered in a nonthreatening way. A good addition is the reminder to never engage certain types of dogs (eg, working dogs and confined dogs). The last section of the book compactly relays the lessons shared in this story. All in all, this book is a great conversation starter for adults who want to teach children about how to meet and treat dogs.—By Stephanie Calmenson, illustrated by Jan Ormerod. 32 pages; illustrated.
