This month JAVMA and AJVR team up to support the AVMA's Task Force on Emerging Technologies and Innovation in the broad subject area of artificial intelligence (AI). In early 2024, the task force was conceived and charged with developing a strategy by which the AVMA could best support practitioners faced with the opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies such as AI. Serendipitously, in April 2024, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine hosted the first ever Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine (SAVY), led by Drs. Parminder Basran, Casey Cazer, and Renata Ivanek-Miojevic.
A natural collaboration evolved between SAVY and your journals with a common goal of sharing best practices around AI and exploring its utility in veterinary medicine. The results of this partnership can be found in 3 Narrative Review articles that are set to appear one at a time in this March issue as well as the April and May 2025 issues of JAVMA. These articles discuss the opportunities and challenges of AI in veterinary practice, as well as the first ever supplemental issue of AJVR, which will focus on AI and be guest edited by none other than Drs. Cazer, Ivanek-Miojevic, and Basran! You'll be able to read more about the supplemental issue in their editorial that will appear with the issue later this month. A digital flip book of the supplemental issue is also planned for this special event.
We hope you enjoy reading about the reality and potential of AI in veterinary medicine for all species and practice types. Clearly there is more to come on this rapidly evolving topic area, and we will do our best to responsibly deliver as we navigate AI together as a profession.
