It’s time for my favorite editorial of the year—announcement of our third annual Journal Awards for articles published in 2023 by veterinary students, interns, or residents. We were honored to have received more than 60 nominations, and the competition was intense! Nominated articles were reviewed by a panel from our Associate Editor Board and ranked on the basis of potential impact and clinical relevance.
We believe in supporting emerging authors and their mentoring teams, and when appraised of the nomination pool, AVMA CEO Dr. Janet Donlin agreed to double the number of awards for this talented group. So, for the first time, we awarded 2 authors in each of the student, intern, and resident categories for your AVMA journals, JAVMA and AJVR.
It is my sincere pleasure to announce the recipients of the 2024 JAVMA and AJVR Journal Awards. If you know a member of an authoring team, please take the time to reach out and congratulate them on their accomplishment.

Winners were announced at the AVMA convention in June, earning profession-wide recognition for the authors and their mentors. Recipients also received a Certificate of Achievement and a cash prize of $500.00. Additionally, we will interview the authors on our podcast, Veterinary Vertex (https://avmajournals.avma.org/page/Podcasts). Finally, we will waive the open access fee ($1,250.00 value) for their next manuscript published in JAVMA or AJVR!
This year, Associate Editor Dr. Sarah Wright also made a virtual collection (https://avmajournals.avma.org/page/2024-Journal-Awards-Collection) of the award-winning articles for all to read. I hope you feel the same pride in our profession that we at the AVMA do when you read these articles. If you would like to nominate a student, intern, or resident author for a 2025 award (for manuscripts published in 2024), simply visit our journal home page: https://avmajournals.avma.org/.
It is our privilege to have been trusted by these authoring teams with their work. We look forward to supporting the publishing journey of these emerging authors throughout their careers. Congratulations again to the 2024 Journal Award–winning teams.
Respectfully,
Lisa A. Fortier DVM, PhD, DACVS
