First off, thank you! We could not produce the content you read in the journals and on the website without your participation.

As 2024 ends, let us look back on all that the journals have accomplished in the past year.

Delivering content

The Publications team has worked to make it easy for readers to access important content through the following achievements:

  • Published 375 articles in JAVMA and 230 in AJVR to date

  • Produced 42 Veterinary Vertex podcast episodes as of press time this year and more than 100 episodes since the podcast’s inception, resulting in over 16,029 downloads in 2024 and 36,063 since launch

  • Collated 10 themed collections on the journals website over the past year

  • Published 11 innovative Technical Tutorial Video articles and launched a JAVMA playlist on the AVMA’s YouTube channel, garnering over 10,000 views in less than 6 months (https://jav.ma/3Uf9nxL)

  • Delivered a digital archive of over 7,500 back-issue JAVMA and AJVR articles from the 1990s, making every article from that decade available

  • Published 2 supplemental issues, bringing focused content on regenerative medicine and ophthalmology

Author focus

Our dedication to enhance the customer service experience for our valued authors is ongoing. JAVMA and AJVR maintained an average of under 100 days from submission to publication, delivering articles to the website on a daily basis. ORCID identifiers were added to our articles, linking authors, reviewers, and editors with their ORCID records to allow for streamlined workflows, improve the overall value of our journals for the community, and ensure greater retention of authors and readers. We also continued to promote the work of our authors through Altmetric, Dimensions, and social media and offer one of the lowest open access publishing costs in the veterinary publishing industry!

Reading experience

Whether reading a print copy of JAVMA or visiting on a computer or mobile device, we want readers to have the best experience possible. Species indicators were added to the table of contents in print JAVMA to make finding specific articles quick and easy. Many of our articles and advertisements now contain QR codes so readers can seamlessly navigate to the content or register for a meeting. Additionally, since their inception, more than 25 themed online collections have been developed, containing articles related to focused areas such as antimicrobials, zoological companion animal health, rabies, and veterinary business and economics.

Industry involvement

In an effort to bring more awareness to the AVMA journals and broaden their reach and scope by continuing to attract potential authors and readers, Associate Editor Dr. Sarah Wright moderated and presented at 2 international scientific publishing meetings, resulting in several article publications:

It has been a banner year in 2024, but there is always more on the horizon. In 2025, we look forward to continuing to bring you the content you’ve come to enjoy and rely on. As always, we appreciate your continued support and feedback.

Respectfully,

Nick DeLuca
