Established stem cell lab at the University of Prince Edward Island

This correspondence is in relation to errors in news articles published in the July 1, 2009, issue of JAVMA1 and the July 2009 issue of AJVR2 regarding the new stem cell lab for horses at the University of California-Davis.

In the articles, it is stated that the University of California-Davis laboratory is 1 of only 4 such university-based veterinary stem cell laboratories in the United States and Canada, with the others located at Cornell University, Kansas State University, and the University of Guelph in Canada. We were taken aback at the omission from this list of the stem cell laboratory located at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island announced its ability to offer equine patients stem cell therapy to treat tendon and ligament injuries under the guidance of Dr. Laurie McDuffee on January 31, 2008, and feature stories and information related to the Atlantic Veterinary College's stem cell research and therapy services for equine patients have run in numerous Canadian and US media outlets since our initial announcement.

It is surprising that within our fairly tight-knit North American veterinary community, the Atlantic Veterinary College's provision of this service would be unknown. At the least, some quick fact-checking would have confirmed that the Atlantic Veterinary College not only provides a service similar to that outlined in the University of California-Davis article but has been doing so for more than a year.

We are proud of the education, research, and professional services programs at the Atlantic Veterinary College and are pleased to be among the leaders in this cutting-edge treatment modality.
