Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate agreement in results obtained with an MRI-based grading scheme and a macroscopic observation-based grading scheme when used to assess intervertebral disk (IVD) degeneration in cats.

SAMPLE

241 MRI and 143 macroscopic images of singular IVDs in 44 client-owned cats (40 cadaveric and 4 live).

PROCEDURES

Singular images of IVDs were obtained of live cats admitted for treatment of suspected neurologic disease (MRI images of IVDs) and of cadavers of cats euthanized for reasons unrelated to spinal disease (MRI and macroscopic images of IVDs) at the Small Animal Hospital, Vetsuisse Faculty, Zurich, Switzerland, between January 12, 2015, and October 19, 2015. The IVD images were randomized and evaluated twice by 4 observers for each grading scheme. Inter- and intraobserver reliability for the grading schemes was assessed with Cohen weighted κ analysis. Agreement and correlation between results obtained with the 2 grading schemes were determined with Cohen weighted κ and Spearman correlation coefficient (ρ) analyses, respectively.

RESULTS

Inter- and intraobserver agreement between results was substantial to almost perfect (mean weighted κ, 0.66 to 0.83 and 0.71 to 0.86, respectively) for the MRI-based grading scheme and moderate to substantial (mean weighted κ, 0.42 to 0.80 and 0.65 to 0.79, respectively) for the macroscopic observation-based grading scheme. Between the 2 grading schemes, agreement in results was moderate (mean ± SE weighted κ, 0.56 ± 0.05), and the correlation was strong (ρ = 0.73).

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Results indicated that the MRI-based and macroscopic observation-based grading schemes used in the present study could be used reliably for classifying IVD degeneration in cats.

Abstract

Objective—To determine the ratio of ventral-to-dorsal transverse diameters between the wings of the sacrum on ventrodorsal radiographic views of the pelvis in large dogs and to validate the reliability of this morphometric analysis for functional interpretation.

Sample Population—Pelvic specimens from 40 large-breed dogs and radiographs of 113 large-breed dogs.

Procedure—In an anatomic and radiographic evaluation, the transverse dorsal diameter (TVDS) and transverse ventral diameter (TVV) between the wings of the sacrum were evaluated in sacrum specimens and on corresponding radiographs of the pelvis and sacrum. The ratio between TVV and TVDS (VD ratio) was calculated. Intraobserver reliability was determined by calculation of the coefficient of variation. In a retrospective radiographic evaluation, the VD ratio was determined in Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherd Dogs. Correlations between VD ratio and breed, age, and sex were tested.

Results—The VD ratio was significantly higher in Rottweilers than in Golden Retrievers and German Shepherd Dogs, denoting an oblique alignment of the sacral wings in Rottweilers (ie, the dorsal aspects of the sacral wings were located more medially than the ventral aspects) and an almost sagittal alignment in the other breeds. The VD ratio was significantly associated with age but not with sex.

Conclusion and Clinical Relevance—Sagittal alignment of the wings of the sacrum is considered to be biomechanically less efficient. These results provide a basis for further studies to evaluate radiographic assessment of the sacroiliac joints similar to the evaluation for hip dysplasia. (Am J Vet Res 2002; 63:1220–1225)

Abstract

Objective—To evaluate the usefulness of high-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) for measurements of anterior segment structures in canine eyes.

Animals—4 clinically normal Beagles.

Procedure—Images were obtained from 8 eyes with a handheld 20-MHz transducer. Eleven anterior segment structures on each image were measured 5 times by 2 independent observers. Coefficients of variation (CVs) for measurements were used to assess intraobserver reliability. Interobserver reliability was assessed by comparing measurements obtained by the 2 observers from the same images. Five images were sequentially obtained from 2 locations (ie, superior and temporal) to evaluate image reproducibility. Anterior segment structures were measured once on each image; image reproducibility was assessed by use of the CV for each parameter measured. Imaging location was assessed by comparison of CV for measurements from each location.

Results—CVs were < 10% for observer A for all measurements except the ciliary cleft area (11.63%). The CVs were > 10% for observer B for measurements of the angle recess area (18.51%) and ciliary cleft width (17.44%) and area (16.01%). Significant differences in measurements between observers were found for 5 of 11 anterior segment structures. Imaging the superior aspect of the globe provided the most reproducible images, although image reproducibility was still somewhat variable, with the highest and lowest CVs for measurements of 33.01% and 11.32%, respectively, in the superior position.

Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—High-resolution ultrasound images can be used to reliably measure various anterior segment structures. Clinically relevant findings in the anterior segment of canine eyes may be detectable by use of HRUS. (Am J Vet Res 2005;66:1775–1779)
