Karl F. Meyer–James H. Steele Gold Headed Cane Award, sponsored by Hartz Mountain Corp.
Drs. Corrie Brown (Guelph ’81), Athens, Georgia, and John Herbold (Texas A&M ’69), San Antonio, won this award in recognition of their outstanding leadership and career contributions in animal health and human health, in the spirit of one health. Dr. Brown, a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, is a professor at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She was honored for her enthusiasm as a teacher and for the response of students to her energy, dedication, and service as a role model. Dr. Herbold, a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and the American College of Animal Welfare, was honored for his 23 years of service in the Air Force and his 17 years teaching epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
AVES Early Career Professional Achievement Award, sponsored by Hartz Mountain Corp.
Lt. Cmdr. Caitlin Cossaboom (Virginia-Maryland ’17), Atlanta, and Lt. Cmdr. Ilana Schafer (Cornell ’08), Atlanta. Dr. Cossaboom is a veterinary epidemiologist in the Viral Special Pathogens Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she is involved in projects and activities related to viral hemorrhagic fevers and zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. She was recognized for her contributions to the Viral Special Pathogens Branch. Dr. Schafer, a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC, established, designed, and serves as project lead for the Epi Info Viral Hemorrhagic Fever software. She was recognized for her surveillance and data management activities for outbreaks of Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Dr. Schafer is a diplomate of the ACVPM. Drs. Cossaboom and Schafer were also honored for their outstanding leadership and career contributions in animal health and human health, in the spirit of one health.

The late Dr. Lester Crawford (see obituary, August 2022, page 1273), a past recipient of the Karl F. Meyer–James H. Steele Gold Headed Cane Award, and the late Donna Vaugn, who served as chief of staff for Dr. James H. Steele, were memorialized at the meeting. A biography of Dr. James H. Steele, “Animal Health, Human Health, One Health: The Life and Legacy of Dr. James H. Steele,” is available on amazon.com and at other booksellers. All proceeds will go to the society to help sustain future programs.
