History

A 6-year-old 41.6-kg (91.8-lb) castrated male Doberman Pinscher was evaluated because of an acute onset of vomiting (3 or 4 instances). The dog had been adopted as a stray 6 months prior. The dog did not have a history of ingestion of foreign material or toxins.

On physical examination, the patient was lethargic and approximately 7% to 9% dehydrated. The abdomen was soft on palpation, with no signs of pain elicited, and no abnormalities palpated. Findings on physical examination were otherwise unremarkable. A CBC revealed mild lymphopenia (700 lymphocytes/μL; reference range, 900 to 5,000 lymphocytes/μL) and a mildly high
